To My Mama

Today is my mom's birthday and I've been thinking about her a lot lately. I would love to share one of my most treasured memories of my mom, in honor of her special day. I hope she doesn't mind.

When I was little, probably from the time I was around 3 years old, I used to get chronic kidney infections. I now know that these were caused by a defective right kidney. They were horribly painful and I remember just being really, really sick. I have vivid memories of having to drink cranberry juice and thinking it was the nastiest stuff in the world. I hated having to drink it and I remember actually pretending to drink it and hiding the still full glass or bottle under my bed.

My mom was always the most nurturing and calming person to me when I would get sick. I'm certain it is a trait she inherited from her own mother. I remember her laying with me for hours and checking on me regularly to make sure I was doing okay and to see if I needed anything.

When I was in High School, I got another one of my regular kidney infections and I remember coming home from school and just crashing in my bed. I couldn't ever remember feeling more sick than I did that day. When these infections would come on, it would seem so sudden and they would almost completely debilitate me. This particular time happened to be when my mom had some sort of project going on and she was extra busy at the time. I didn't expect her to stop what she was doing to care for me because in my eyes, I was a "big girl." My mom always referred to me as her "silent sufferer." I just suffered in silence and didn't want to put anybody out because I was sick.

Without fail, my mom cared for me with more love and tenderness than I felt I even deserved. I always knew that she loved me, but that day I KNEW.

I hope that I have carried that trait over with my own children. Being the mother of six and always having a child who is either sick or injured in some way, I'm afraid I have become slightly heartless in a sense. I always think of my mom when my children are sick and in need of some extra love.

Thank you mom. I love you more than you know. Happy Birthday.

I actually didn't know that you had so many kidney infections as a kid. Or that you were a silent sufferer. That shows how much I was observing when we were kids.

But that's a sweet story!

You always share such sweet memories of your family. Not that I love my children being sick, but I do love being able to give them the extra love (and especially cuddles) when they are sick just like my mom did. Happy birthday to your mom!

You are a silent sufferer. You hardley ever complain, I had forgotten about your crazy kidney thing. I think that its funny how "some" of your kids are so opposite of you. They have the Matson Drama in them. hahaha...... no really...so sorry.

Oh that was such a sweet post... that made me almost cry in a good way. Mom's are so special and I guess this shows that you may not even realize what you are doing at the moment that leaves and imprint in your child's mind that you LOVE them. Thanks for sharing, it is always good to remember how important our Mothers are!:)
